Saeid Dehghan is an Iranian human rights lawyer, educator, and author. Dehghan holds active memberships in both the Iranian Bar Association and the International Bar Association. Throughout his career, he has exemplified his commitment to justice by representing a multitude of Iranian citizens, dual nationals, and non-Iranians in high-profile political cases within the courts of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In response to mounting pressures and threats from Islamic Republic authorities, he made the difficult decision to relocate to Toronto, Canada, where he continues to champion human rights causes on an international scale as the founder and President of Parsi Law Consultancy, CA. Dehghan is also the founder and director of the Oral History Project of Human Rights in Iran, where he interviews prominent thinkers on the ClubHouse app every Friday to an audience of thousands. His books, “From the Heart of Society" and "Us and Ourselves," cover topics including public law and citizenship. Dehghan has also directed numerous courses for activists as well as civil and professional associations, offering specialized training in human rights, civil rights, criminal procedure, case management, and negotiations. He also provides expert analysis and guidance to international organizations, including key UN bodies such as the Human Rights Council and the Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, to advance the cause of justice and human rights in Iran. Saeid Dehghan was born on September 9, 1972 in the village of Bishe Kola near the Caspian Sea in northern Iran. Having lived in a large family until he was 18, teamwork became intrinsic to him, which he learned from his farmer father. In the introduction to his first book (From the Heart of Society), Dehghan wrote about his reasons for being drawn to law and his childhood, which coincided with the Iran-Iraq War, and discussed the systemic discriminations in the country. While studying humanities in high school, he developed a profound love for logic and philosophy, but also became interested in law. After witnessing the fate of his elder brother, who was a political prisoner during the 1980s, he was drawn more closely to the legal profession, and especially human rights. Despite being accepted into nearby universities to study management and teaching, Dehghan persuaded his parents that he should move to Tehran to continue his studies in law. He was working in a law firm in the center of Tehran at the same time as he was studying at the university. Dehghan completed his two-year compulsory military service as a law instructor at the Police Academy. Before going to Germany and Switzerland for advanced studies, he wrote legal articles in Iranian media and offered advice to people under the column "Vakilroaya" (People’s Lawyer). Later he chose the same title for his law firm. Dehghan, who always opposed entering the legal profession through a test-based exam, finally took the bar exam in 2006 upon the recommendation of the late Bahman Keshavarz and his mentor, the late Fereydoun Manoo, and completed his apprenticeship with Keshavarz as well. Initially working as an independent lawyer and later representing the Bar Association in the Iranian Civil Society Council, in recent years, he served as a member and vice-president of the Council. Dehghan, who in 2004 had undertaken a specialized course in Human Rights in Denmark, later studied trade union rights at the Global Labour University under the International Labor Organization programs in Geneva and the Berlin School of Economics and Law. Dehghan completed his internship in 2012 on freedom of associations at the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights. Dehghan also received a special human rights award on behalf of imprisoned lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, presented by France and Germany in 2019, and gave the award to her family during her imprisonment. Dehghan has represented important political cases and defended many Iranian activists, dual nationals, and non-Iranians, and is an active member of the International Bar Association. In recent years, after almost three decades of writing and journalism experience, he became the editor-in-chief of the Bar Association Magazine, the oldest legal publication in Iran, which he significantly transformed in content and form. After the November 2019 massacre of protesters by state security forces in Iran, the shooting down of the Ukrainian passenger plane by IRGC forces, and escalating pressures and threats from government officials, including the filing of security cases against him, Dehghan was forced to leave Iran and take residence in Canada. Despite his forced migration, he continues his human rights activities by providing legal guidance to Iranian citizens, especially protesters and justice seekers, and advising international institutions on how to support the people in Iran. Dehghan, who established Parsi Law in Canada in 2021, is now working internationally with a team specialized in Iranian law. At the same time, he is the manager of the Iran Human Rights Oral History project. As the author of the five-volume Collection of Legal Questions and Answers, the Applied Scientific Course on Human Rights, From the Heart of Society, and co-author of Us and Ourselves in the field of public law and citizenship, Dehghan has participated in and spoken at numerous international conferences and seminars. He has also organized many specialized, civil, and human rights courses for citizens as well as groups and civil and professional associations.
